about

Wanted to write a song in the vernacular, in the down-'n'-dirty style of the era circa Robert Johnson. Kind of in the vein of Phonograph Blues--old technology, and a bit of 'some man's always opening in its drawers' vibe. But I'm embarrassed to sing the song because it's kind of unsettling to sing songs 'from the day' in a modern context. I mean, it's kind of creepy, and I'm not...

Not so long ago, but long after I wrote this song, I saw an ad on TV that showed some germs or something hanging out at the 'space bar.' Did I inspire the idea? Probably not--it's a big world of synchronicities.

lyrics

typewriter blues
by murray munn August 2005

Babe your letters are getting crowded
My key is always getting stuck
Yeah the letters getting crowded
My enter key is getting stuck
Better get some that Underwood grease
Find some better luck.

Your carriage is getting twisted
Your shift can’t go low-case
Your carriage getting twisted
And your shift won’t go low-case
Gonna get my screwdriver
Gonna look up under your base.

Babe I’m used to two-hand typing
Now I hunt & peck for love
Yeah used to do two-hand typing
Now I hunt & peck for love
I need more typing lessons
Can’t never get enough.

Now I hear you’re at the space-bar
Got spaces in the text
Hear you’re down at the space-bar
Lots of gaps all in your text
Gonna take myself on down there
Plug the holes before you get wrecked.

Babe we used to have a rhythm
Just clickety-clacked along
Yeah we used to have rhythm
We clickety-clacked along
Now our ribbon’s getting busted
And the red ink’s all but gone.

This typewriter’s getting old now
But I hate to let it go
Ol’ Underwood’s getting old now
Don’t you hate to let it go?
It’s still made of solid steel
With regular lubes, she’ll go.

about

Murray Munn Whitehorse, Yukon

Murray dabbles in the Irish bouzouki, but his main instrument is the guitar. Although the demo available on Bandcamp is in the blues genre, Murray considers himself more a singer-songwriter in the fingerstyle folkie genre. Music of "Irish revival" (Planxty, Bothy Band) and of the UK are major influences and interests. Bruce Cockburn and Bert Jansch are much admired. ... more
