about

False fronts and changes afoot in the north ... what is real and what is image? Just a fun romp on a choo-choo groove. (Well-wishers too often have said, "That's a nice take on Mystery Train." I didn't plan it that way and wasn't really aware of that song. To me, it's an original song.)

FYI, Rotary Peace park is maybe 2 or 3 kilometres from the Industrial area. And the Motorways area is half that. Walkable.

When we were setting up I had my foot on the Hendrix effect pedal, and asked Jim if he could capture the sound I heard, which begins the track--he could! And I asked Ed to double-up on the train-track rhythm, and what a fine job *he did!

WHITEHORSE RIVERFRONT BLUES
© 2004 Murray Munn

Oh that White Pass Railway
16 coaches long
Oh that White Pass Railway
16 coaches long
Took ‘em 12 years to build it
And everything went wrong

Men died down tunnels
And men died from lead
Men died down tunnels
And men died from lead
But ol’ White Pass kept coming
Gotta finish that old railway bed

They bored holes through mountains
Dropped bridges over ravines
They bored holes through mountains
Dropped bridges over ravines
But now it stops in Fraser
An end to dead man’s dreams.

(Solo)

But now that Whitehorse Trolley
It’s been running all summer long
That Whitehorse Trolley
Been running all summer long
Well it took my baby
That trolley done me wrong.

That Whitehorse Trolley
Took my baby ‘way
That Whitehorse Trolley
Took my baby ‘way
She travelled far from me
From Rotary Peace down to Motorways.

I’m gonna find my baby
over in Industrial land.
Gonna find my baby
Over in Industrial land
If I can’t afford the train fare
Gonna have to walk the best I can.

about

Murray Munn Whitehorse, Yukon

Murray dabbles in the Irish bouzouki, but his main instrument is the guitar. Although the demo available on Bandcamp is in the blues genre, Murray considers himself more a singer-songwriter in the fingerstyle folkie genre. Music of "Irish revival" (Planxty, Bothy Band) and of the UK are major influences and interests. Bruce Cockburn and Bert Jansch are much admired. ... more
